Des Kelly tops Pools Predictions Mini-League.

Abreast has received a £1,000 donation thanks to The Football Pools and The Football Writers’ Association.

Daily Mail columnist, Des Kelly, came in at the top of the Football Writers’ Premier 10 Mini League. Des has elected to donate his cheque to abreast, a charity based in Bristol.

Abreast is a breast cancer research charity dedicated to improving the quality of life of women with breast cancer undergoing breast cancer surgery. The research work funded by abreast will help enable patients and their surgeons to make informed, evidence-based choices about their breast reconstruction.

Des Kelly said: “It’s never any harm to ask football writers to put their money where their mouth is – and if it’s a sponsor’s money and charities benefit from that, even better.

“We’re in a very competitive industry and I hope to come out on top in a few more monthly battles to help charities where I live in the West Country and right across the country too through the FWA and Football Pools. I know about abreast’s work in the field of treating breast cancer and they deserve our support.”

Dr Zoe Winters, Consultant Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol and Consultant Breast Surgeon at University Hospitals of Bristol, is chief fundraiser for abreast. She added: “We’re delighted to receive this donation and for the opportunity to spread the word about the valuable work we do.”

In total, eight national football writers are competing in the Premier 10 Football Pools Predictions game, in an attempt to become the winner of their Predictions Mini League. National journalists such as Patrick Barclay from The Times, Des Kelly from The Daily Mail and Shaun Custis from The Sun have been playing The Football Pools to predict the scores of football matches and accumulate points for predicting the correct scores each month.

Each week, the writers submit their predictions of either a home win, away win, or a draw for the ten Premier League fixtures, over the course of the month. The overall monthly winner is then determined by the highest cumulative score, and receives a cheque from the Football Pools to present to a charity of their choice.

The Football Writers’ Charity League is just one the charitable initiatives that The Football Pools will be supporting in 2010 and 2011. In 2009, The Football Pools became an Official Licensee of the Premier League and Football Leagues and an Official Partner of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football Leagues. Partnerships were formed across the Football Leagues with the objective of improving the lifestyles of fans within the Football Club’s communities. These schemes included The Football Pools donating £1.63 million of funding into ‘Premier League Health’, a scheme designed to tackle Men’s health issues across the country via 16 clubs. The Football League Trust also received a donation of £2.59 million to create the pan-disability scheme, ‘Every Player Counts’. There are now over 40 active clubs across the UK participating in the scheme.

The Football Pools has been creating millionaires since 1923.

Football fans can win an estimated jackpot of £30,000 every week from just £1 just by predicting whether it will be a home win, draw, or away win for each of the 10 weekly Barclays Premier League fixtures. If you are unsure you can even cover multiple outcomes, and they even pay out if you get one wrong! The Football Pools also have loads of other great football prediction games to win every day, and because it is ‘pool’ betting, the jackpots keep rolling over until someone wins the lot!
